Procedure for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Before procedure

  • Patients will be assessed by the surgical team, a clinical dietician, and a psychologist.
  • Complete medical and surgical reports will be taken.
  • Preoperative blood tests and X-rays are conducted to determine the patient’s suitability for surgery.
  • If you are smoking, you will be advised to stop.
  • You will also be advised to restrict certain medications before surgery.
  • The surgeon will describe to you the benefits, potential risks, and care after surgery.

During Procedure

  • The surgery takes about an hour.
  • The surgeon will make a few small cuts in your stomach and insert a laparoscopic camera to view the inside.
  • The surgeon will then insert other medical treatments and remove 3/4 of your stomach.
  • The remaining stomach is reattached to form a “sleeve” or tube.
  • The procedure cannot be reversed.

After Procedure

  • You are hospitalized for about 2 – 3 days before being discharged.
  • The patient is moved to recovery and continuous monitoring is necessary.
  • There is pain at the time of recovery. Each person encounters pain differently.
  • Bowel movements may be complex or painful. Constipation occurs during the first week of the postoperative.
  • Activity – Walk, don’t lift anything heavy. You will feel weak and tired for a month after surgery due to the decrease in calorie consumption.
  • It is imperative to drink plenty of fluid regularly to avoid dehydration.
